La Cucarachita Martina
La Colmenita gives this popular Caribbean folktale a Cuban twist with its magical combination of music, dance and theater. The play tells tells the story of Martina, a beautiful cockroach in search of a suitor who can capture her heart with his music.
Abracadabra
La Colmenita draws on the strength of Cuba’s art, its history and the talent of its young performers. Abracadabra, which was written by the children, was inspired by the story of the Cuban Five, who are hailed as national heroes in Cuba for their efforts to prevent militant Cuban exile groups from attacking Cuban citizens. The five were arrested by the U.S. government in 1998 and convicted of conspiracy charges and sentenced to lengthy prison terms. On Oct. 7, Rene Gonzalez was allowed to leave prison under supervised release. The play is about a teacher who invites her students on a journey in search of truth and justice.
